From Placement Breakdowns to Engineering Degrees: The Life-Changing Impact of Foster Care
This Foster and Kinship Care Week, DCC Industry Group is celebrating the carers who open their homes and hearts to children and young people, helping create stronger futures not only for individuals, but for entire communities.
For Foster Care & Kinship Practitioner Kyra, the impact of foster care can be seen in the everyday moments of growth, healing and connection.
“These carers provide not only a safe place to live, but also stability, care, guidance and a sense of belonging that can be life-changing,” Kyra said.
One story in particular has stayed with her.
A sibling group of three had experienced multiple placement breakdowns and time in residential care before moving into a stable foster placement.
“When they first arrived, they were understandably unsettled,” Kyra said. “The oldest sibling was on the verge of expulsion from school, while the younger two were not engaged at all.”
Through the dedication of their foster carer, things gradually began to change.
School attendance improved. Relationships strengthened. Connections to culture and extended family were rebuilt. Over time, the oldest sibling not only re-engaged with education but went on to become dux of their private school, secure employment and begin studying engineering at university.
Today, they are in their second year of an engineering degree.

“Stories like this really highlight the impact that stability, support, strong relationships and connection to culture can have,” Kyra said.
While stories like these are inspiring, they also highlight the vital role foster and kinship carers play within our communities.
Every child deserves to feel safe, valued and connected. Foster carers help make that possible by providing stability during some of the most challenging periods in a young person’s life. The impact extends far beyond childhood, helping young people build confidence, develop positive relationships and create brighter futures.
“Foster & Kinship Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible work carers do every single day,” Kyra said.
“They support children’s emotional wellbeing, help them heal from past experiences, maintain connections to family and culture, and encourage them to grow, learn and thrive.”
At DCC, supporting carers is just as important as supporting the children in their care. Through training, advocacy and ongoing guidance, the Foster and Kinship Care team works alongside carers to ensure they feel confident, supported and equipped for the journey.
This Foster and Kinship Care Week, DCC extends its heartfelt thanks to every foster and kinship carer who continues to show up with compassion, courage and commitment.
Because sometimes, all it takes is one stable home, one caring adult and one opportunity to change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
That journey might just lead from placement breakdowns to engineering degrees.
