You might be surprised at how many people can foster. Carers come from all walks of life — single or partnered, young or older, renting or owning a home, LGBTQ+, from all cultural and faith backgrounds. What matters most is that you can provide a safe, caring, and supportive home environment. Here are the basics:
- Age & residence: You need to be at least 18 and living in Queensland.
- Checks & safety: You and any adult in your home will need a Blue Card and background checks. A household safety study makes sure basics like smoke alarms and secure storage are in place.
- Health & wellbeing: You’ll complete a short questionnaire and may need a GP letter to confirm you’re healthy enough to care for children. It’s about making sure you’ll be supported, not about being “perfect.”
- Finances: Carers don’t need to be wealthy. You just need to manage your own costs so the allowance for the child supports their needs.
- Character references: A few people who know you well will provide references.
- Mindset: Above all, you need patience, empathy, flexibility, and the willingness to learn.
Many people worry their circumstances might rule them out—but often, that’s not the case. If you’re unsure, reach out and let’s talk it through together. We’ll help you explore whether fostering could work for you.
