Understanding Foster Care & Kinship Care

At DCC Industry Group, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and strong in who they are. But sometimes, due to tough circumstances, a child or young person can’t live with their birth family, and that’s where foster and kinship care step in.

These aren’t just services. They’re about walking alongside families, building trust, and wrapping the right support around our kids when they need it most. Whether it’s for a short time or long haul, we’re here for every step of the journey.

What is Foster Care?

Foster care is when a child needs a temporary safe place to live — a home filled with care, understanding, and structure. Foster carers are everyday people who open their doors and hearts to children who can’t stay with their family due to safety concerns, trauma, or family breakdown.

Foster carers aren’t doing it alone, we’re right there with you. At DCC, we provide culturally safe training, 24/7 support, and a network of people who’ve been there and get it. Our carers help children heal, find stability, and move toward whatever long-term plan is right, whether that’s reunifying with family, moving into kinship care, or creating a permanent home.

What is Kinship Care?

Kinship care is when kids stay connected to the people and culture they already know. It’s about placing children with grandparents, aunties, uncles, siblings, or even close family friends — someone they trust.

This kind of care honours connection. It keeps kids close to their roots, language, community, and identity. It reduces disruption and gives them a strong sense of belonging, especially important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, where “mob looking after mob” is part of who we are.

Our role at DCC is to walk alongside kinship carers, supporting them with the knowledge, resources, and guidance to keep the kids safe and strong, and help families stay connected.

Why It Matters

Whether you’re a foster carer or a kinship carer, you’re doing something powerful, giving a child stability when their world feels shaky. You’re not just providing a roof over their head, you’re offering healing, hope, and a place to grow.

At DCC, we know that community is everything. That’s why we focus on relationships, with carers, with kids, and with culture. And we’ll keep showing up, every day, to support the carers who open their homes and hearts to make a difference.
